Using the Mind to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

POTSDAM, NY -- All of us worry sometimes and some of us worry all the time, but whichever category you are in, a series of three
"do-it-yourself" anxiety and stress relief workshops starting Thursday, July 10th will be of benefit for a more peaceful and enjoyable life.

The series of workshops entitled Mind & Body Centered Anxiety & Stress Relief begins with the first session entitled "Using the Mind to Reduce Stress and Anxiety" at 6:30 p.m. at the Potsdam Community Room in the Civic Center complex next to the fire station.

This first session is an overview of the many current stress reduction techniques that are mind-based.  In addition to learning a little about all of them, guided imagery and self-hypnosis have been singled out for a more in-depth participant experience. Concepts such as neuroplasticity, the negativity bias, rumination, and health concordance will be explored and the inherited nature of anxiety explained.

Attendees will learn the difference between worry, anxiety and stress and the evolutionary value of worry. Largely due to the invention of the FMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), where the brain can be studied as people meditate or use other mental techniques, we now know that actual physical changes occur in the brain in people undertaking mental training.  The brain remains open to change throughout a persons lifetime and small changes in thinking can have a big impact on personal well-being, for those trained in these proven techniques.

Presenter Kathy Montan is a Body-Centered Expressive Therapist in private practice in Canton, NY who has also given workshops at Hospice, School Counselors of Northern NY, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University and the St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging.
