Presenter Biographies


Matt Bowman
Creator of Oasis Edible Landscapes, Matt is a certified teacher of permaculture and a twice certified permaculture designer who has been farming and gardening for the last seven years. He hopes to assist in the transformation of St. Lawrence County by increasing ecological function and food production. www.oasispermaculture.com



Jon Ignatowski
A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Jon currently operates his own bicycle repair business, Iggy’s Bike Works (http://iggybikes.wordpress.com/). Jon has been turning wrenches for several years, and loves to teach others how to save time and money by working on their own mechanized implements. Jon has participated on several bicycling tours, and has been a mountain biking instructor in New Mexico.


Jim Juczak
Jim is an animated and truly engaging speaker in hundreds of topics. He has had a wide and varied career as a consultant for off-grid energy system design, as a military contractor specializing in sustainable water systems in Iraq, as the Regional Energy Program educator over a 10 county area with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County, 25 years as a high school "shop" teacher, writing articles and lecturing on a wide variety of self-reliance topics, and as author of the 2008 books "The High Art and Subtle Science of Scrounging," and in 2011 "Water Supply Systems for the Homesteader"." Jim lives with his wife and daughter at the 55-acre Woodhenge Sustainability Campus, an ecologically designed community in Adams Center, NY with 5 green residences that are also mortgage free.  Jim has been a Featured Speaker at all three Local Living Festivals, as supported by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Environmental Education Initiative For Active Learning, Research, and Advocacy Grant funding through St. Lawrence University.


Lomastro, Janet
Janet Lomastro is a long time advocate and Cornell Cooperative Extension educator on breast-feeding, but another of her passions is definitely turning her food and yard waste in to rich, lovely soil that she distributes to her gorgeous gardens on the Raquette River in Potsdam.  Nicknamed the "Doyenne of Dirt", the "Sultana of Soil", Janet freely shares the secrets and joys of making excellent compost.


Kathy Montan
Kathy is registered as a Somatic Movement Therapist through ISMETA.  She works with clients on personal holistic health issues, relating to stress and anxiety among other issues, and has been giving workshops since 1994.  She has given workshops for Hospice, School Counselors of Northern NY, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University and the Office of the Aging.


Youmell, Paula  RN, MS, CHC
Paula Youmell
is a local Health and P.E. Teacher, Certified Herbalist, Nutrition Educator and Reiki Master with a passion for REAL FOOD, Holistic Healing and Living.  She is an RN and recently the author of Hands On Health: Take Your Vibrant Whole Health Back Into Your Healing Hands.  She has trained in many areas of healing the mind, body and spirit; including natural health, herbs, reiki, yoga and holistic coaching.

Youmell, a native of Brasher Falls, trained at SUNY Canton, SUNY Cortland and Syracuse University and received certifications through Integrative Nutrition for Health Coaching, the School of Natural Healing and
Herbalism at Sage Mountain.  She is a long-time advocate of healthy living practices, from her time as a labor and delivery nurse in Potsdam to teaching Health and PE at Canton Central School District in the 1990's and Parishville School from 2009 to 2011.

Her book Hands On Health: Take Your Vibrant Whole Health Back Into Your Healing Hands is Paula's first in an expected series of books. The second book in the series has been contracted and will be titled Early Morning Coffee and Donuts: For Tending Mind, Body and Soul.  Her writing, seminars, and one-on-one educational coaching endeavors are all part of her business that entices her clients to eat healthier; move their body more frequently; get outside into the natural world we are inherently a part of; sleep better; and take wholesome care of the body, mind and soul.  It is her joy to assist people to set goals and make sustainable changes to improve health and happiness. Hands On Health helps to navigate the world of contradictory nutrition and health advice to determine what dietary and lifestyle changes would be specifically beneficial to Seminar and Workshop attendees.
