          KICK OFF -- Saturday, November 15, 2014
One week only! Through November 22
, 2014

The New York State Association of Reduction, Reuse and Recycling (NYSAR) is spearheading a Textile Recovery Campaign to promote awareness about reusing or recycling textiles.

This is a statewide educational campaign that will be rolled out FOR ONE WEEK OF TEXTILE COLLECTIONS beginning on America Recycles Day (11/15), with various partners such as the Local Living Venture (LLV.)

The LLV is contacting every thrift outlet in St. Lawrence County in an attempt to get them all on board to accept textiles -- in some cases that they might not normally choose to work with.

With the help of the EMC, the St. Lawrence Solid Waste Department, and leadership from the Recycling program at DANC, the leftover items not wanted by the thrift stores will be transported to recycling, re-use and rag facilities in the state.

Therefore, items do NOT have to be use-able as clothing, etc. - any torn or stained items will be recycled!

The definition of "Textiles" includes
  • clothing
  • shoes
  • sneakers
  • belts
  • purses
  • blankets
  • sheets
  • towels
  • draperies
  • stuffed animals.

In the US, approximately 85% of unwanted textiles are land-filled - only 15% are donated to thrift stores.  The average US citizen throws away approximately 70 lbs of textiles per year for a total of 21 billion pounds.

Join in and gather your goods to donate between November 15th and November 22nd (some locations have restrictions on drop-off times, so please check their stipulations below, as we add collection sites!)

More outlets coming soon !

Hello Friends!

We've had a tremendous response for information about this project, so please excuse this "mass-mailer" in response.  We're a small volunteer-run organization and can only handle a certain amount of correspondence - but we are heartened by how many folks are interested in this topic!

We put together a webpage of basic information that hopefully answers your basic questions, at least.  The week of 11/15 to 11/22 is when we have set it up, so check the days and times the closest outlets to you are available and drop off anything at all, including torn, stained or otherwise "un-useable" items.

It includes the outlets that will accept your goods - and when - but it is still being updated through Monday the 3rd.  So please check back in on this page, it should be complete with all outlets in St. Lawrence County by then!

Thanks so much!  If your questions aren't answered at the site by next week, please feel free to write back of course!

Thanks so much,
Melinda, Chelle, Rajiv
for the Local Living Venture team
PS If you are closer to Jefferson County, every County landfill and recycling center there will be accepting donations on Saturday, Nov. 15th only.  This is not the case in St. Lawrence County however!
